Engage, Explore, and Learn Outdoors

At Mountain Roots, we bring the classroom to the great outdoors! Our programs are designed to connect K-8 students with the natural world around them through hands-on, experiential learning. By integrating outdoor exploration with classroom subjects, we offer unique opportunities for students to engage in active, meaningful play while reinforcing key lessons. Our interdisciplinary approach creates a dynamic and immersive learning experience that makes education come alive.

Bring Nature Into the Classroom

Mountain Roots transforms the school day by immersing students in environmental education that sparks curiosity and a deeper connection to their surroundings. Through hands-on, experiential learning, our instructors engage K-8 students with grade-appropriate science and social studies concepts. Our place-based curriculum aligns with North Carolina State Standards, while highlighting the unique ecosystems of Western North Carolina. These interactive lessons allow students to explore, learn, and grow within the natural world around them.

Hands-On Learning in Nature

At Mountain Roots, students dive into the natural world by exploring their own schoolyards. They study local plant life to understand the process of photosynthesis, reenact the life cycles of North Carolina salamanders, and investigate the geological history of nearby rock formations. With maps and compasses in hand, students learn essential navigation skills, all while discussing ways they can protect and preserve the local environment. These hands-on activities foster a deep connection to nature and inspire a sense of responsibility toward their ecosystems.

Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders

At Mountain Roots, we focus on nurturing the leadership skills of young students through our Leadership Education program. Our TLC curriculum (Teams, Leadership, and Character Development) empowers students to value collaboration, respect, and empathy, teaching them how to communicate effectively and work inclusively. Through these lessons, we aim to shape a generation of compassionate leaders who lead with kindness, integrity, and a sense of community.

Building Stronger Connections and Communication

Mountain Roots fosters deeper connections among students by engaging them in team-building exercises that promote collaboration and trust. Through self-reflection, students explore their own values and discover healthy methods for expressing their emotions. They develop an appreciation for diversity, learn respectful communication techniques, and practice conflict resolution strategies that strengthen their relationships and enhance their community.

What Teachers Are Saying

“I have heard my students talking about your visit over and over. They are telling parents, classroom volunteers, and anyone who will listen about how we can take care of the Earth. Thank you for teaching such valuable lessons.”

-Transylvania County teacher

“I always get comments like, ‘This is SO much fun!’ and ‘Do we have to go inside already?’. From my perspective, I see them retaining more of what they learn, because they are playing an active role in their learning, moving around, and really thinking about what they're doing.”
